Behind the Scenes of Harvard Medical School Part II

If you could describe your medical school in three adjectives, what would they be? This week, we interview Logan for another look at Harvard Medical School.Logan grew up on a horse ranch in Issaquah, Washington. His love for swimming and for the outdoors brought him to Dartmouth College, where he captained his varsity swim team and led Dartmouth’s hunting and fishing club. His research on sleep disorders and hypertension named him a James O. Freedman Presidential Scholar. After graduation, Logan traveled to Nepal, where he worked on several medical service projects. Logan is currently an MD candidate at Harvard Medical School and president of Harvard’s Global Surgery Student Association. As such, you will most often find him chained to a desk in Harvard’s medical library, studying. If you could describe your medical school in three adjectives, what would they be? Supportive, diverse, progressive What's one thing that the average applicant would be surprised to learn about your medical school's curriculum? HMS incorporates and emphasizesa lot of very important curriculum that often falls by the wayside at other medical schools such as geriatrics, social medicine, health policy, and medical ethics. What is something unique or different about the admissions interview process at your medical school? I found the interviews at HMS to be very pleasant. That is not necessarily unique of HMS, asI had that experience at other medical schools, but it is comforting to know, going in, that the interviewers are not aggressively "testing you." Rather, they are genuinely trying to get to know you. It is helpful to know that going in because it may put interviewees at ease, and allow their true (and wonderful)self to come out. What's a tradition that you've enjoyed at your medical school that most prospective students don't know about? HMS is truly pass/fail. There are no reported internal grading or ranking scales. Residency programs are only told whether a student passed or failed each course, and are given some faculty letters of recommendation. This significantly (and truly) decreases student's stress levels because we don't need to focus on"what's going to be on the test," but rather onwhat's most important:the health andwellbeingof our futurepatients. What's one thing you wish you'd known when you were applying to medical school? By the time you're applying to medical school, your resume is pretty much set; there is not much time left for any significant activities that would further demonstrate your aptitude for medical school. Thus, the biggest challenge is showcasingthe right activities, in the right way,from your wealth of experience. Your grades andMCAT are what they are, and you're left choosing who to ask for letters of recommendation, whatextracurriculars (clinical exposure/shadowing, research, volunteering) to highlight, and what to include in your personal statement. This thought process is going to be different for every unique candidate, but I wish I fully appreciatedhow important it is to think about what medical schools are looking for in applicants, and how to best demonstrate that you fit the bill in a (somewhat) unique way. What kind of doctor do you want to be when you grow up? :) A good one! Want to work with Logan as you prepare your MD applications? ;

A firewall is a collection of components, interposed between two networks, that filters traffic between them according to some security policy (Cheswick Bellovin, 1994). Due to the increase in network attacks and awareness of cyber security firewalls are used not only in companies but also in home networks. Firewalls are the frontline of defence to secure the networks from security risks and attacks from cyber criminals. Firewalls filters network traffic based on filtering rules defined by the firewall administrator or admin. Although firewalls protects from network attacks, virus etc, it depends on the firewall policies defined, if the policies are not defined properly it proposes a security risk and limits the effectiveness of firewall security. . There are mainly three types of firewalling techniques based on the OSI layer in which the firewall is acting on. They are (1) packet filters, which inspect each packet passing through them, (2) application Gateways which act on specific applications such as FTP, Telnet etc and (3) circuit level Gateways, which apply security mechanisms whenever TCP and UDP connections are established. The Intermingling of these techniques, however, does not alter the basic principles of their use. These techniques can be studied most effectively by taking one technique at a time. 1. Definition In technology, words have precise, specific meanings; therefore there Is a need for defining a technical term clearly. The extent to which a term should be defined or the length of a definition depends on the writers purpose and the knowledge level of the reader. Before going to the problem of how to define, it is better to think about what should be defined first. It is not possible of course, to set up an absolute list of terms and ideas that would require definition, not even for a specific body of readers, but it Is possible and desirable to clarify the point of view from which the problem of definition should be attacked. 2. Year Round Education Essays - Youth, , Term Papers

Year Round Education Imagine a child, on a hot summer day... no baseball, no swimming, no picnics or amusement park rides. Instead of spending time doing all of the things kids like to during summer vacations, this child, is attending school. Year round education (YRE) has been around since 1904, with 3,000 schools and 2 million students currently using the program (National Association). Students in year round schools go to school the same 180 days that traditional schools attend. In YRE, the summer vacation is eliminated, replacing it with shorter, more frequent breaks. There is a number of ways the year round school can operate, including: 90/30, 45/15, and 60/20. The most popular of these calendars is the 45/15, where the year is divided into 4 nine week terms, separated by 4 three week vacations (National Association). YRE has been a debated issue in education almost since it began. Supporters of YRE say this schedule improves the learning process. The biggest debate, however, comes from the parents and teachers who believe there are no proven studies that YRE helps the learning process at all. So, is year round schooling a good choice for the education of your children? YRE will not only hurt the education system, but it will create chaos for the lives of the students attending and their families. Supporters of YRE believe year round schools are more cost effective than traditional schools. With population in some districts rising rapidly, YRE is said to reduce overcrowding of schools and classrooms. In many cases, school calendars are changed in response to population growth. By running schools all year, districts can pack in more students and postpone building new schools (Endless Summer). Supporters of YRE say that by staggering vacations and schedules, schools can increase capacity by 25-50 percent (Should Kids go). Supporters argue that the costs for the transition form a traditional calendar to year round schools are modest compared to the construction costs of new schools (Inger, Morton). However, those against YRE feel that expenses will only be reduced temporarily. According to a "Year Round Education Study" conducted by the Lewisville, Texas Independent School District, "Findings of a year-long study concluded that there is no financial benefit to operating a Single Track System. The system would cause a modest increase in operational expenses without providing any instructional benefits" (Time to Learn). In Iowa, the Carroll School Board found that the costs of the district moving to a year round education system could range from $16,786 to $32,412. Taylor Elementary School, in Cedar Rapids, spends more money according to the classroom teachers that any other elementary school. Schools in Davenport reported that the switch to YRE will cost an additional $36,000 in salaries, $3000 per year for equipment, and supplies, and $22,300 as a one time expense for teacher training. Plus, the move to YRE would also cost the district an extra $92,626 to fully air condition the school building. In Des Moines, Moulten schools spend about $80,000 annually for year round schooling. If YRE were implemented, Indianola school districts would spend an additional $3,655 for middle school and $5,000 for elementary school to pay for the additional secretarial, administrative, and custodial time during the summer (Time to Learn). Costs will not only be incurred with the schools, but also with the state and with taxpayers. Cost savings for one of these groups may create cost increases for the other (Naylor, Charlie). Contrary to what supporters of YRE claim, there are definitely extra costs to implementing and maintaining a year round education system. Supporters of YRE say that year round schools would promote continuous learning. The belief is that students forget a lot of what they learn while on long summer vacations. This is seen more in slower learning students and for those who know English as their second language. It is also thought that because students retain more when the learning process is interrupted for only short periods of time, teachers in year round schools need to spend less time reviewing pre-vacation material (Inger, Morton). Although this seems true, opponents believe that there is research that needs to be addressed. Mary Lee Smith and Gene V. Glass have done extensive research in year round schools since 1974. In a study conducted by Smith and Glass, in a school district in Colorado, the learning loss in the students was evaluated. They found that although teachers in year round schools spent less time reviewing pre-vacation material than teachers in traditional schools did, the actual achievement differences were insignificant on tests designed specifically

Accounting is not a root cause of the financial crisis, but it has an Essay

Accounting is not a root cause of the financial crisis, but it has an important role to play in its resolution - Essay Example The United States of America was the epicenter of this crisis. The sub-prime crisis caused many key businesses to close down and equity markets all around the world recorded tremendous decrease of their respective indices. This financial crisis almost created mass scale unemployment around the world. It is very interesting to study the role of financial accounting in this crisis. Many experts have expressed the view that the method of fair value accounting have exacerbated this crisis but did not initiate it. The first part of this essay will aim to analyze the role that fair value accounting played during this crisis and whether it has enhanced the crisis or not. Second part of this essay tries to find out whether accounting can provide remedial solutions to this crisis. Role of accounting in the financial crisis According to Financial Accounting Standards, even in the absence of active market or during unfavorable market conditions the banks are required to calculate the values of its assets which will be different and lower than the true value. The final figures of various financial instruments like the Credit Default Swap are calculated at fair value and as a result create misleading impressions. Due to the fair value accounting the banks will sell the various securities at a relatively cheaper price. This would trigger the panic button in the markets and as a result there would be a global meltdown. Through the fair value method of accounting it is not possible for the banks to measure the financial instruments accurately. As a result the banks are forced to incur losses because it sells its assets at lower prices. These losses affect the entire financial markets. There is also a possibility that the banks spent large amount of money to acquire assets at market value calculated according to the fair value accounting method but these investments eventually becomes a burden and cause huge losses. But a closer examination of the situation will bring out the f act that the role of fair value accounting in this financial crisis is very minimal. The US banks lost most of their fortune on loans that they made to non credible borrowers. Losses due to mark to market were far lower than the losses the bank made from bad loans to non credible borrowers. The banks recorded high losses even when they have not valued the price of their various financial instruments under the method of fair value accounting. The major portion of the losses constitute of defaulting loans that their debtors failed to pay off in time. Economists like Easton, Burks and Badertscher have tried to find whether due to the fair value accounting the banks during the sub-prime crisis had sold their securities at lower prices than the actual but they have not found any evidences which would support this idea. According to another expert Shaffer the impact of loan losses was much greater than the losses suffered by the bank due to fair value accounting. So it is quite clear that fair value accounting method did not play any significant role to create the financial crisis but it only helped to worsen the crisis further1. Role of accounting in the recovery from the crisis Generally, most of the organizations use a method of accounting that combines the methods of historical cost accounting and fair value accounting. This creates confusion in the minds of the investors. Panic among the investors accelerated the crisis as the companies failed to give their investors a clear picture of the net asset values and the total values of its assets. The common investors lost all

Current Threats to Maritime Activity Research Paper

Current Threats to Maritime Activity - Research Paper Example However, a huge threat is also imposed by poor relationships among countries since it hinders the deterrence and capture of terrorist elements. This paper found that increased international cooperation is essential to minimizing threats to maritime activities. Maritime activities are essential to trade and socioeconomic development. It is on the sea that many countries rely on the production and transportation of goods. However, countries and private industries face a worsening threat in maritime activities because of the growing and re-emerging threats at sea. These threats include terrorism, piracy, drug trafficking, oil smuggling, and transportation of criminal elements and materials (Gilbride & Nash, 2004). As Gilbride and Nash note, â€Å"oceans are the largest ungoverned space on the planet,† which makes the sea a greater security challenge for the global community. In 2004, then President George W. Bush emphasized that the American government is intent on disrupting every enemy threats (as cited in â€Å"National Strategy,† 2005), including those at sea. The first step towards a safer maritime environment is the identification of threats posed by criminal entities. Most of these are related either directly or indirectly to terrorism and pose serious economic threats to every nation around the world. Deng (1997) enumerates five types of activities that fall under maritime activities: â€Å"(1) state politics, including military operations, expansion, administration, diplomacy, exile, rebellions, and popular movements against the state; (2) cultural exchange; (3) expeditions; (4) immigration; and (5) trade.† Although the five activities Deng enumerated above are all essential to national development and security, the first and the last ones create the greatest impact for any country. Hence, this paper will focus on

Indian Gaming Regulatory Act Essay Example for Free

Indian Gaming Regulatory Act Essay In 1988, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act establishing gaming on Indian reservations as a means of helping tribes become self-sufficient and less dependent on government dole-outs. Donald Bartlett and James B. Steele co-wrote an article which appeared in Time magazine on December 16, 2002 entitled â€Å"Wheel of Misfortune† negatively criticizing the consequences of instituting the said Act. A day later, the Native American Times published an editorial which contains dissenting arguments against the first article. According to Bartlett and Steele, the major defect of the Act is the unequal redistribution of profits derived from gaming in the reserves: â€Å"It gives billions of dollars to the white backers of Indian businesses and nothing to hundred of Native Americans living in poverty†¦hundreds of millions of dollars to one Indian tribe with a few dozen numbers—and not a penny to a tribe with hundreds of thousands of members†¦(78)† The bulk of the essay expounds and provides evidence to these assertions. It also points to the fact that while these tribes earn tax-free revenues, they continue to collect millions in government aid. The Native American Times editorial, meanwhile, accuses the Time magazine article as simply a piece that â€Å"fan the flames of racism with lies (â€Å"Indian Gaming† 84)† and proceeds to either refute or justify the points raised of the latter. Bartlett and Steele claim that only a few Indians are benefiting financially from the Native-American gaming industry thus defeating the purpose of the act, which is to raise the average Native American out of poverty. At the same time, a high percentage of the profits from these lucrative casinos go to the wealthy leaders of tribes. The editorial counters this argument by stating that there are varied reasons why some tribes do well than others. It cites the case of Oklahoma, home to more Native Americans than any other state. The state prohibits Class III gambling thus preventing an opportunity for the Native Americans in Oklahoma from realizing the Congressional Act. Today tribes continue to â€Å"fight with every resource available to them to hold off those who would send them back to the metaphoric reservation (â€Å"Indian Gaming 85). † The editorial also praises the success story of the Shakopee tribe which the Time magazine article derides. The success is well-deserved, according to the editorial, since this group has experienced one of the most harrowing histories of violence inflicted against Native Americans. For all its passionate defense and criticism of the Time magazine article, the editorial of the Native American Times does not touch on the other issues raised by the former like cronyism among the tribal leaders, the involvement of white Americans behind the casino operations, and the applications for recognition by extinct tribes that suddenly resurrects because of the business opportunity. Then again, the former is a lengthier and more detailed presentation complete with figures and facts, in keeping also with its being an investigative article. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the editorial does not need to refute the Time magazine article point by point and that its entire argument is summed up when the editorial writer states that the reason why people like Bartlett and Steele are being too critical about the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act is because â€Å"the thought of rich Indians is against nature we can only assume (85). Inequality, anomalies, and other issues about the Native American and their casinos may exist but they are no different to those in regular gaming industries. Despite some wealthy members, Native Americans are still the poorest and most victimized people in America.

Beats as a counterculture Essay -- essays research papers

The Beats As A Counterculture Many of the Beat writers wrote in a style known as spontaneous prose. Allen Ginsberg often writes in this style. He does so in the poem â€Å"Howl† in which he rants and raves about society via his friends – Jack Kerouac, Willaim S. Burroughs, Lawrence Ferlingetti, and Neil Cassidy to name a few, live. He discusses their poverty, civil disobedience, the ways that they fight society, and his personal fight against industrialization; he uses many images in order to allow the reader to understand his lifestyle, the lifestyle of his friends and points of view, specifically their rejection of society. Ginsberg depicts the deprived environment in which he chooses to live in through imagery. For instance the speaker proclaims: â€Å"†¦Dragging themselves through the Negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix.†(Ginsberg 62) This is a scene depicting an average morning after a night of partying. His friends are trying to make their way back to reality. They search the streets where they have been in Jazz clubs for more drugs so they do not have to â€Å"suffer[ing] Eastern sweats and Tangerian bone grindings and migraines of China under junk-withdrawal†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Ginsberg 63) Ginsberg is telling of his friend’s addiction and fear of withdrawal. The speaker states: â€Å"†¦Yakketyyakking screaming vomiting whispering facts and memories and anecdotes and eyeball kicks and shocks of hospitals and jails and wars†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Ginsberg 63) In this passage the speaker of â€Å"Howl† depicts an insane asylum because his mother, himself and many of his friends; specifically Carl Solomon, who the poem is dedicated to, had been admitted or admitted themselves into hospitals.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The Beats were all connected to the reality of poverty. Ginsberg states: â€Å"Who poverty and tatters and hollow-eyed and high sat up smoking in the supernatural darkness of cold-water flats floating across the tops of cities contemplating jazz.†(Ginsberg 62) The obvious image of poverty is when he clearly states â€Å"poverty† but along with this image Ginsberg says â€Å"cold-water flats,† meaning that there was not enough money to have hot water. Another image of poverty is â€Å"who plunged themselves under meat trucks looking for an egg.† They were so desperate for food that they jumped under trucks in search of a single egg. The Beats chose this poverty stricken lifestyle in order to further rej... ...e of a world that no one wants to come. He is using his own version of propaganda to persuade the reader not to support industrialization.. Ginsberg reinforces the second section with the first and third sections. He prepares the reader for a dramatic change from the first to the second section by showing the reader that he is anti-society. By showing that he and his friends are anti-society it is a logical step to say that he is against what society is planning and creating. They are planning and moving toward industrialization. Ginsberg is against industrialization partially for the reason that it is the societal norm to support it. Howl is a poem in which Allen Ginsberg complains about his life and about society. The speaker of the poem describes that he/she and his/her friends reject society and therefore are prone to act in a manner counter to common culture. He explains his points using amazing imagery that allows the reader to see exactly what he/she is writing about. In section two Ginsberg states his complains about industrialization, which was beginning at the time. These ideas are reinforced throughout the poem. I will forever enjoy these rantings and ravings.

How Influential Is Macbeth’s Ambition? Essay

In ‘Macbeth’, a play set in Scotland, William Shakespeare wrote a tragedy of one man’s ambition. It is the shortest of Shakespeare’s tragedies, and has a very fast pace. It tells the story of Macbeth’s ambition to be king, and the chain of damage he causes by pursuing this ambition. This ambition is the fatal flaw that causes his ultimate downfall. Once Macbeth’s lifelong ambition seems to be fulfilled, it causes consequences that his mind cannot handle. The play shows that one may get easily influenced by other people when he/she is over- ambitious. Ambition is something that everyone can identify with, and ‘Macbeth’ is a compelling study of how ambition can destroy you, so the audience are automatically interested in Macbeth’s character. When we are first introduced to Macbeth, he is already ambitious. But by being tempted to the extremes by two sources of external evil – the witches and his wife, his ambitions are only increased by making them seem like they could be a reality. The witches and Lady Macbeth, whom are both truly evil figures, influence Macbeth heavily throughout the play, and both exploit his ambition to become king. Their influence is the reason Macbeth’s ambition spirals so out of control and ends in tragedy. Our first impression of Macbeth is of a heroic, famous, popular man who is well liked by the king – In Act 1 Scene 2 Duncan refers to Macbeth as â€Å"noble Macbeth†. We first meet Macbeth in Act 1 Scene 3, when he and Banquo have arrived to meet the witches. Macbeth’s first words; â€Å"So foul and fair a day I have not seen† immediately associate him with the witches, because they say in Act 1 Scene 1; â€Å"Fair is foul and foul is fair†, so evil is brought to mind. Macbeth is connected with the supernatural in the audience’s mind from the onset. This is the first thing that is not consistent with Macbeth’s image of a war hero. In this scene, the witches declare that Macbeth will become Thane of Cawdor and also king of Scotland. Macbeth strongly believes the witches words, especially after the first part of the prophecy comes true, he begins to think the second part may also come true. Their prophecies influence his ambition as seen in an aside, when he begins to consider murdering Duncan, the current king of Scotland. The aside follows closely Macbeth’s desires and doubts – he does not know whether these prophecies are good or bad, but he dearly wants to be king. â€Å"If good, why do I yield to that suggestion/ whose horrid image doth unfix my hair/ and make my seated heart knock at my ribs,/ against the use of nature?†. However, we can sense that Macbeth doesn’t actually want to murder Duncan, as he is horrified by these murderous thoughts. But Macbeth cannot stop thinking about what the witches have said, showing that he is considering the idea and is drawn to it, and that he has ambitions to be king within him already. In Act 1 Scene 5, Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth, also influences Macbeth’s ambition. She is revealed to be very driven and ruthless, and she clearly wants Macbeth to be king. She says; â€Å"Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it†, meaning that Macbeth is not without ambition, but lack of ruthlessness that is needed to become king. She influences him to kill Duncan. She also encourages him to conceal his feelings, telling him to; â€Å"Look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under’t†. Lady Macbeth is telling Macbeth to look respectful and welcoming and happy on the outside, but to hide his plotting and scheming and evils inside. Lady Macbeth’s ability to influence her husband leads us to believe that she is the primary cause for the destruction of Macbeth. She is the biggest encouragement to his ambition, since she uses her husbands trust to change her own future. In Act 1 Scene 7, evidence that Macbeth has a human side and is very worried is found in a long soliloquy – a speech where Macbeth is alone on stage so we can again see what Macbeth is thinking. He is worried about his eternal soul, and what his punishment will be in heaven if he kills Duncan. He thinks of reasons why he should not kill Duncan, and comes to the conclusion that the only reason he is doing it is because of his strong ambition. When Macbeth decides not to continue with their plan to murder Duncan, Lady Macbeth urges him to act on his desires and ambition or he will think of himself as a coward. She exploits his ambition by questioning it when she says; â€Å"Art thou afeard/ To be the same in thine own act and valour As thou art in desire?† She manipulates him further, calling him a coward and insulting his manhood, knowing that Macbeth will want to prove himself. This shows that Lady Macbeth is somewhat responsible for Macbeth’s downfall because, she drives him to go through with the murder and makes up the details of the plan to kill Duncan, while Macbeth was considering not even going through with the it. Although Macbeth had the thought of killing Duncan, he would not have acted on that thought unless Lady Macbeth persuaded him. Lady Macbeth is a sly person, able to manipulate her husband, and this ability to manipulate Macbeth makes her partially responsible for the destruction of Macbeth. She makes sure he will perform the deed by taking an active role in preparing for the murder: framing the two chamberlains and cleaning up afterwards. As Macbeth worries about failing to carry out the plan, Lady Macbeth tells him to screw up his courage and they wouldnt fail. Encouraged by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan who stays as a guest in his castle. Macbeth then becomes king of Scotland. Although Macbeth becomes king, he cannot have peace. His endless ambitions lead him into misery. Being obsessed by the witches’s prophecies, he even tries to control his future. He remembers the witches’s predictions that his friend Banquo’s sons will be kings of Scotland. Macbeth considers Banquo and his son Fleance as threats to his security as King. Although outwardly friendly to Banquo, Macbeth is jealous and fearful of him. Plagued by worry and to prevent this from happening, Macbeth orders three men to kill Banquo and his son. Macbeth’s desire to gain wealth and status completely overpowers him. He becomes more ambitious than his wife, and finds himself drained and drained of emotion, as we see in Act 3 Scene 1. â€Å"He hath a wisdom that doth guide his valour to act in safety. There is none but he Whose being I do fear; and under him My genius is rebuked, as it is said Mark Antonys was by Caesar. Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown, And put a barren scepter in my gripe, Thence to be wrenched with an unlineal hand, No son of mine succeeding †. Throughout the play Macbeth is undermined by his insatiable ambition. Macbeth was at first reasonable enough to keep his ambition in check, however it eventually became too strong for even Macbeth and therefore over-powered him. Reasoning was abandoned after the decision to kill Duncan was made. At that point we see no serious questioning of the motives of the three witches when he is told of their cunning and misleading predictions. The decision to kill Duncan also signified the last serious attempt at moral contemplation on the part of Macbeth. Throughout the novel we see that the Macbeth’s ambition completely subverted their reasoning abilities and eventually lead to his downfall. Macbeth, whom initially was a very reasonable and moral man, could not hold off the lure of ambition. Macbeth’s excessive ambition motivates him to murder Duncan, and once the evil act is accomplished, he sets into motion a series of sinister events that ultimately lead to his downfall. We see this when he says; â€Å"I am in blood stepped in so far that should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o’er†. Macbeth is saying that he is so accustomed to the idea of murder that he will now be able to wade through a sea of blood. This is very ironic, as previously in the play, Macbeth had feared that he would never be able to wash the blood from Dunca’s murder off his hands. During the course of the play, Macbeth changes from a person with some moral sense to a man who will stop at nothing to get and keep what he wants. Although we are presented with his deterioration from good to evil, we can see his human side throughout the play, which makes it a tragedy. Once Macbeth’s ambition has ‘set the ball rolling’, events happen quickly in the play as it gathers momentum. This intense ambition leads to his downfall.

10 Animal Sounds in Japanese Words

In different languages, there is little consensus about what sounds animals make. This holds true in  Japanese as well as other tongues. In English, for example, a cow says moo, but in French, its closer to meu or meuh. In Japanese, the bovine says moo moo. American dogs say woof, but in Italy, mans best friend makes a sound more like bau. In Japanese, they say wan wan. Below are the sounds various animals say in Japanese. Japanese Animal Sounds The table displays the name of the animal in the left column, with the transliteration of the animals name in bold and its depiction in Japanese letters below. The English name for the animal is listed in the second column. The third column lists the sound the animal makes in bold with the Japanese letters for the sound below that. The sound an animal makes in English is included below the Japanese spelling in the third column, allowing for easy comparison to the animal sound in Japanese. karasu㠁‹ã‚‰ã â„¢ crow kaa kaaã‚ «Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£â€š «Ã£Æ' ¼ niwatorié ¶ rooster kokekokkoã‚ ³Ã£â€š ±Ã£â€š ³Ã£Æ'Æ'ã‚ ³Ã£Æ' ¼(Cock-a-doodle-doo) nezumi㠁 Ã£ Å¡Ã£ ¿ mouse chuu chuuãÆ' Ã£Æ' ¥Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£Æ' Ã£Æ' ¥Ã£Æ' ¼ nekoçÅ' « cat nyaa nyaaãÆ'‹ãÆ' £Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£Æ'‹ãÆ' £Ã£Æ' ¼(meow) umaé ¦ ¬ horse hihiinãÆ'’ãÆ'’ãÆ' ¼Ã£Æ' ³ butaè ±Å¡ pig buu buuãÆ'â€"ãÆ' ¼Ã£Æ'â€"ãÆ' ¼(oink) hitsujiç ¾Å  sheep mee meeãÆ' ¡Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£Æ' ¡Ã£Æ' ¼(baa baa) ushi牛 cow moo mooãÆ' ¢Ã£Æ' ¼Ã£Æ' ¢Ã£Æ' ¼(moo) inuçŠ ¬ dog wan wanãÆ' ¯Ã£Æ' ³Ã£Æ' ¯Ã£Æ' ³(woof, bark) kaeruã‚ «Ã£â€š ¨Ã£Æ' « frog kero keroã‚ ±Ã£Æ' Ã£â€š ±Ã£Æ' (ribbit) These animal sounds are usually written in the katakana script, rather than kanji or hiragana. The Bowwow Theory The bowwow theory  posits that language began when human ancestors started imitating  the natural sounds around them. The first speech was onomatopoeic and included words such as moo, meow, splash, cuckoo, and bang. Of course, in English especially, very few words are onomatopoeic. And around the world, a dog might say au au in Portuguese, wang wang in Chinese, and as noted, wan wan in Japanese. Some researchers have suggested that the animals a culture is most closely aligned with will have more versions of the sounds they make in their respective languages. In American English, for example, a dog might say bowwow, woof, or ruff. Since dogs are beloved pets in the U.S., it makes sense that American-English speakers would want to have a menu of sound words for this pet. The Dog in Japan Dogs are also quite popular as pets in Japan, where they were domesticated during the Jomon period in 10,000 B.C. Though katakana script is most common, you can write the Japanese word for dog,  inu,  in either  hiragana  or  kanji — but since the kanji character for dog is quite simple, try learning how to write it in kanji. Phrases referring to dogs are as common in Japan as they are in the West. Inujini  means to die like dog, and to call someone a dog in Japenese is to accuse him of being a spy or dupe. The sentence  Inu mo  arukeba  bou  ni  ataru  (when the dog walks, it runs across a stick) is a common Japanese saying, meaning that when you walk outside, you could possibly meet with an unexpected fortune.

Super Power Involvement in the Middle East - 1401 Words

The superpowers, namely the USSR and US were in engaged in a war by proxy, which is very easy to identify if you analyze the conflicts in the Middle East from 1948 until, and including, the Yom Kippur War of 1978. The superpowers would employ tactics such as supplying their various ‘allies’ in the Middle East with weapons and finances which would afford them the ability to engage in the many conflicts that took place in that period such as the Suez Crisis, Six Day War and the Yom Kippur War. All of this was done without either superpower’s putting their own men on the ground to fight, for fear of an all out war between each other. However much the superpowers might have fuelled the conflicts with supplying the Arabs and Israelis with weapons and finances, they were not the cause for the conflicts as they are much deeper rooted. Israel and the Arab states have always seen tension as per their culture and religious differences, and the growing nationalism of the Ara b states and Zionism in Israel, which amounted to extreme actions such as the three major conflicts during the time period 1956-1978. Superpower involvement in the Middle East saw its first significant impact in 1956 when the Suez Crisis took place thus giving us the first hints of the war by proxy that the superpowers were fighting between each other. Analysis Of A Light Rail Transit (Lrt) System Systems Science and En

Question: Describe the Analysis Of A Light Rail Transit (Lrt) System for Systems Science and Engineering. Answer: Introduction The growth in size and population of the cities has led to pressure over the traditional transport systems as the design capacities of the existing systems are overrun. Another major concern that is prevailing in the world is increasing level of pollution that is affecting the public as well as environment. Hence, various governments have come up with a solution with the increasing pollution level with the introduction of Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs) which is capable of carrying out adequate passengers thus reducing the presence of number of vehicles on the road. Therefore, this report discusses on the system validation, evaluation as well as testing of the Light rail transit system. System design is such an activity to proceed from a recognized set of necessities for a particular system towards a design that can meet the requirements (Siewiorek and Swarz 2012). Apart from that, the lifecycle of system is the proposed view of a system that can address all of the stages of the presence of the system for incorporating conception, development, distribution, design, production, phase-out, retirement, disposal, operation, and support (Neely, Gregory and Platts 2015). This particular report is mainly aimed to implement and analyse the design of this system by illustrating the system test, system validation and the system evaluation of the light rail network along with its efficient operations. Besides that, the study provides a detailed overview of the testing of the system as well as system validation and system evaluation of a particular project of constructing light rail network. On the other hand, the optimization of the design of this project of developing light rail network has also focused to be analysed in this report. Apart from that, the system design operations of the project are also aimed to discuss in regards to the maintainability and reliability. Therefore, the report has focused on giving exact evident in terms of establishing the literature quality wi th through the suitable evidences. Light Rail System Testing Evaluation and Validation It has been pointed out that the Testing and Commissioning (TC) of the light rail system begins after the idea as well as definite configuration stage. The basic role of TC is for guarantying that the specialized as well as venture prerequisites are addressed, and it should be possible parallel to assessment as well as approval. The evaluation of any specific project is nothing but the systematic process to investigate the worth and the merit of a particular object. As per this project evaluation to construct the light rail network, this particular project can be executed as the light rail network (Goodwin, Graebe and Salgado 2014). Apart from that, the fact can also be portrayed that the project of implementing light rail network include the advanced and innovative technologies that result in the less fuel consumption, lower carbon emission and reducing the traffic congestion. The test plan characterizes additionally the reporting and approving systems for all assets (hardware/staff ), the timetable, tests necessary in case of each examination, the wellbeing, and documentation for entire examinations did. A perfect model utilized amid the TC is nothing but the FAT-SIT-SAT-SATOV, segmented into 4 phases to be specific: Factory Acceptance/Inspection Test (FAT), Site Installation Test (SIT), and Site Acceptance Test (SAT) as well as Overall Site Acceptance/Performance Test (SATOV). Factory Acceptance / Inspection Test (FAT) This particular phase is the tools testing component as well as the equipment at the time of the production in the factory or in the same circumstances (Luff, Hindmarsh and Heath 2014). This particular stage of the testing technique confirms that the supply of the equipment as well as the individual components is as per the design and the entire requirements of the project. The factory acceptance test should be accomplished for all the equipment as well as individual components and in association with the systems to all the software and hardware. Site Installation Test (SIT) This particular testing phase follows the process of installing the subsystem and equipment in-site. The major objective of SITs is for demonstrating that all the sub-systems or equipment are wired and installed, are suitable and are checked for operation (Blanchard, Fabrycky and Fabrycky 2014). The tests are mainly comprised of the no-load or standalone tests, visual inspection as well as few operational tests. The Site Installation Test can be carried out on the basis of site by site as well as the railway line sections in phases are equipped and developed. Overall Site Acceptance/Performance Test (SATOV) This particular testing approach can be demonstrated as the set of operations that can prove that the entire system would satisfactorily operate in the proper service (Massie, Chun and Culler 2014). This particular testing process needs the substantial amounts of systems operation on a basis of coordination in such a way that is same as the system operation in the commercial service. It would involve the performance of the entire functional tests o all the systems and equipment with the involvement of operator. Optimization in operations and design of Light Rail Transit In the construction or the design of the light rail network project, the optimization is the integrated process of optimization of the determination of the advanced machineries for the design of the project, revenue, cost of energy, reduction in the traffic congestion and the development of the innovative technology used in this project execution. According to the viewpoint of Friedland (2012), the design of this particular project requires that the engineers should consider that the trade-offs are available among the implementation attributes of the light rail network project in the areas on weight, manufacturability, performance, quality and cost as well. Thus, the system design of the light rail network project need to be optimized for the efficiency as well as the performance early in the cycle of the project design as well as reduce the congestion of traffic. The optimization of the proper execution of the light rail network project can be evaluated in regards to the reliability as well as maintainability. In other words, according to Van Gigch (2013), the most important as well as the most essential fact to design the system of light rail network construction project is that the optimization of designing the project in case of this project is actually evaluated by with the help of the output of reliability as well as maintainability. The reliability along with maintainability operations and activities and the optimization of design of the Light Rail network project, consist of the availability projection of the operation in future and the design changes of the project aiming in the implications in regards to costs through the analysis of cost-benefit. During monitoring the light rail network project, the fact can be implemented that the average reliability could only be achieved there were the extenuation situations that could be explored over the system designing of the project (Obinata and Anderson 2012). The operation managers as well as team of managing the project of light rail network should make a conscious move in terms of finding the new ways for constructing and designing the new buildings in regards to the assurance of the reliability and maintainability factors. the results in terms of transferability of all the technology those gave been utilized in this project execution can be truly got over the modelling and by making a proper utilization of monitoring the studies as the basics for the parameter settings or assurance of reliability and maintainability in relation to the project. Apart from that, the light rail network project has to aim on the implementation of the maintenance strategy in terms of ensuring consistency and maintainability in the design operation of the system of light rail network. According to the viewpoint of Hays and Singer (2012), the process of maintenance strategy can help this Light Rail network construction project for ensuring the fact that the team of managing the project and the team of development are capable enough for performing the proper safeguarding on the appropriate tools with the proper resources (Milanese et al. 2013). The most important fact in regards to this project is that the ultimate optimization of this Light Rail network construction project is the minimization of the traffic congestion on road. On the other hand, another optimization of the project can be perceived through maintaining the environmental sustainability. Human factors in designing concepts It is a very necessary and crucial fact for considering the human factors in the stage of development of the Light Rail network construction project for achieving the efficiency in terms of operations and the projects structure usability (Siewiorek and Swarz 2012). Thus, the human elements in the development and design of this particular project of light rail network construction needed for the effective understanding of several structural design parameters of light rail network. Therefore, it can be stated that the designers who deal with the architecture design are one of the most crucial human factors for the execution of the light rail network project. It is necessary in order to derive different rnecessity for the human factor for designing the factors in regards to the project structure of the light rail network in the procedure of strengthening distinct jobs should be accomplished to complete the process of construction as well as the process of development. As opined by Neely, Gregory and Platts (2015), the efficient breakdown to numerous human elements, which are operating on the light rail network project, assisted in the easy activity management and maintenance. Besides that, according to Luff, Hindmarsh and Heath (2014), the human factors with the execution of the project of light rail network was important for combining of both the responsibilities as well as tasks those have been assigned to them for the proper execution of the activity. The human factors responsibilities with the project involve the decision-making, management implementation, task management as well as task completion efficiency in the ambience that is f ully optimized. While the stage of project implementation is continued, the preliminary project design of constructing the light rail network, it is essential to implement the validation of the design of the light rail network as well as the efficiency determination and the system effectiveness. On the other hand, the static as well as the dynamic elements of the light rail network project are needed for being accessed and managed very effectively by the workers, engineers, managers as well as the architects who are working in the light rail network project (Blanchard, Fabrycky and Fabrycky 2014). The workers who are actually participating in the development and the design of the light rail network project can give effectively the requirements and limitations of the designed light rail network. However, the engineers and the designers as well participating in this project can assist effectively in the process of evaluating and calculating the stress factors impacts and the projects external factors (Friedland 2012). In addition, the effectiveness of the participants or the workers involved in this project also assists in order to fulfil the goals behind the implementation of light rail network projects. Conclusion and recommendation The analysis of the operational stability as well as the structural design for the light rail network project is compulsory and important in order to assure the optimization, reliability and maintainability in order to design the project system. The efficiency and the maintainability n the structural architecture and designing the project can be founded with the conduction and the evaluation of testing the system and several element analysis those are affecting stability, reliability and maintainability of light rail network. As per the optimization of this project, reduction of the traffic congestion is the most desired outcome of this particular project, which cannot be accomplished with proper system testing and evaluation. The testing and authorizing of such ventures ought to hold entirely fast to the FAT-SIT-SAT-SATOV model as already examined. In association with the improvement of the operations for the LRTs unwavering quality, as a proposal, a broad examination or attainability on the territories through which the light rail system would pass. It would give solid input on how best for planning and laying the tracks in regions with the era of high trek. Contemporary Issues in Accounting

Question: Discuss about theContemporary Issues in Accounting. Answer: Introduction: This has been observed that the role of the CEO is to delegate the strong corporate governance for the seamless operation of the business. By introducing the interesting remuneration packages of the top level executives, the effectiveness of the organization can be enhanced. The same concept has been identified in this unit of corporate governance and the given topic six where it is clearly discussed that the an effective corporate governance can be practiced with the independent role of the CEO and thus enhance the value of the firm. Theme: CEO of the organization is playing the dynamic role in the different business field. A vast theoretical and practical implication of the CEO has been emphasized in this research. The effectiveness of the organization largely depends on quality of the corporate governance which is likely to provide long term incentives to CEOs. Thus the given article investigates the quality of institutional governance which has effect on the performance of the firm and the compensation structure of CEO of the organization. This has been found in the article of Deegan (2013) that the standard of the firms external corporate governance performance needs to be evaluated by the management of the organization. However, Ahn (2016) articulates that this has considered one of the contingency of the organization because most of the organization failed to generate the variations in the compensation contract of the CEO of the organization. This has been observed that most of the CEO engaged in mitigating the pr oblem related to the agency between managers and shareholders. In the below the diverse opinion has been discussed and analyzed the relationship between the performance of the CEO and institutional governance of the organization. The Dynamism of CEOs Performance has Limited Exposure in the Firm Performance: The given article agrees that the diverse long term incentive contracts of CEO can increases the effectiveness of the corporate governance. However, this has been argued with the fact that the structure of the CEOs compensation can be considered as the total of the fixed compensation inclusive of the additional compensation related with the prior and current performance (DesJardins and McCall 2014). In other words, this can be said that the most of the organization has been structured their compensation as per the benchmark of the past performance of the CEO along with the future potentiality in term of delivering the job responsibilities and delegated authoritative responsibilities. Therefore, the organizational performance excellence is completely depends upon the top executives efforts and actions during the time period. This has been found in the article of Bivens and Mishel (2013) that the satisfactory pay level, thus, influence the current and future performance. Unfortunately in most of the case scenarios, companies are negatively affected due to weak corporate governance. The same opinion in Ahn (2016) addressed that the lack of judgmental approach of CEO disclose the false financial implications of the company. For instance the companies like HIH Insurance, One.Tel are perfect example where inadequacies of independent judgments of CEOs were the main reason behind their collapses. All these organization faced problem during the negotiation between the shareholders and managers of that particular organization. Most of the opinion of the managerial power theorists define that the compensation of the CEO is the optimal for the shareholders. It determines that the ultimate structure of the compensation which can be influence in the shareholders maximization of values. Presence of Active Monitoring for Generation of Cross-Sectional Variations in the Compensation of CEO The study based on Fama and Jensen is based on the control mechanism of the firm exists especially with the active monitoring of the data generated on the cross sectional variations for the purpose of then CEO compensation. The control mechanism is further related to the external and the internal contracts, which is related to the study of the behavior of then external shareholders satisfaction (Deegan 2013). In the different types of the studies, it has been observed that then relationship between the employee compensation and performance of the firm is most related to those situations when there is weak monitoring of the performance of the firm. The study revealed that the quality of the external corporate governance of the firm is required to maintain an interaction to study the Gap in the incentive compensation. The main aim of the study is to provide the company the compensation variants which are directly related to the active monitoring performance of the employees. (Ahn 2016) . The Intervention in the Short-Term Orientation is Required to Create an Ailment with the Long-Term Interest of the Shareholders With the different study conducted by Deegan (2013), it was found that the CEOs needed to prevent the short term in order to create a better ailment with the interest of long term shareholders. The study conducted has further shown that the sort run behavior of the CEO could affect the potential cost of interest of the shareholders. Then study conducted depicted the results that the various types of the institutional investors can determine the incentive contracts of then CEO. The overall study showed that the various benefits associated to the employee compensation were able to encourage the working performance of the CEO in terms of the compensation received was only short term in nature (Ahn 2016). The study focused on several broad aspects such as boosting of short-term capital prices, advertising, Research and development. Hence, the corporate governance plays a crucial role in determining the compensation and the employee performance. References: Ahn, J.Y., 2016.
